Experience...

When it comes to land use, marine, water, environmental and natural resource use conflicts, Alex Grzybowski and Dan Johnston are two of Canada's leading experts in multiparty dispute resolution and collaborative conflict transformation. Together they have spent over forty years helping parties to successfully and collaboratively deal with complex and intractable conflicts. They have spent thousands of days working directly with parties to help them fashion outcomes that are supported by all concerned. They deliver mediation and facilitation support at both the operational/community level as well as at the highest levels of government, industry and civil society within Nations and between them.

They have played a central mediation or facilitation role in a number of high profile and successful initiatives including:

Within Canada:

  • Collaborative Land Use Planning initiatives in British Columbia - including multi-stakeholder agreements to establish land use plans over 30 million hectares of lands in the Province of British Columbia. These plans addressed longstanding disputes over environmental protection and sustainable development. Creation of the Great Bear Rainforest Conservation area was the result of one of these processes.
  • Negotiation and Implementation of Government to Government Agreements between First Nations and the Provincial Government in BC as well as between First Nations.
  • Negotiation of sustainable solutions to netcage salmon aquaculture in BC.
  • Strategic Planning for the Canadian Mining Sector - Whitehorse Mining Initiative.
  • Internationally:

  • Providing standby mediation support to the UN Mediation Support Unit on transboundary water issues in Central Asia, Afghanistan and Iraq and on political mediation process design in Fiji.
  • Facilitating Canada's National Roundtable on Corporate Social Responsibility of the Canadian Extractive Sector Operating in Developing Countries.
  • Negotiation of Implementation Protocols between Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam for the multinational agreement to share and sustain the water resources of the Mekong River Basin.
  • Establishment of Centers for peaceful conflict prevention and resolution in Thailand and Cambodia.
  • Applied Transboundry River Treaty negotiation training for representatives of all the Nile Basin countries.
  • Partnership between Placerdome and local indigenous people, three levels of government, the Military and a US Foundation in southern Venezuela.
